Any fretted instrument can play better than the most expensive one you can buy in a store. Even the 'best' instruments need to be adjusted to the players unique style (pick or fingers?), as well as the proper string gauge. For the custom stuff I only use the highest grade, all solid tonewoods such as Honduran Mahogany, Indian Rosewood, Sitka/Englemen// prices start at 3400$ for base models.
